Allah

This is His essence and His proper name. All other names and attributes are gathered within this blessed name. Allah Almighty says: "And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them." (Al-A'raf, 180) It is the first of the Beautiful Names revealed in the Qur'an, for it appears in the Basmala. It is the greatest of Allah's ninety-nine names. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah has ninety-nine names. Whoever commits them to memory will enter Paradise. Allah is One (Witr) and loves what is odd." This name gathers within itself the entire meaning of the Beautiful Names and encompasses every other name of the Most High Creator. For this reason all the names and attributes known as al-Asma' al-Husna are attributed to it. Thus we say "Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem, Al-Aziz, Al-Ghaffar and Al-Qahir are among the names of Allah," but we do not say "Allah is among the names of Ar-Rahman." The name Allah appears in 2,697 places in the Qur'an. To Allah belong the most beautiful names; the finest names are His alone. Allah is One in His essence, and the name of His essence is Allah. Yet He is not one in the sense of a number that could have a like or an equal, but with a supreme oneness that admits no peer and no likeness. In His essence He is not merely singular — He is uniquely One. The majesty and splendour of the plural forms in divine speech, such as "We bore witness" and "We created," express the grandeur that arises from the coming together of the divine attributes and names; and the exalted name Allah is the one name that contains all of these attributes and names. The name Allah, like Allah Himself, is a name without peer or likeness. Since a multiplicity of attributes and names does not require a multiplicity of essence, each of those names and attributes points to one of Allah's incomparable qualities. What was taught to Adam were likewise the most beautiful of names. The most beautiful names belong to Allah alone. So, O believers, call upon Him by those names, invoke Him with them, and remember Him by these beautiful names. A reminder: The servant should cling to Allah with all his heart. His eye should see none but Him, he should turn to none but Him, he should ask nothing of anyone but Him, and he should fear none but Him.

If a Muslim persists sincerely in this name, saying "Ya Allah, jalla jalaluhu", he is kept safe from the evil of Satan, attains happiness, his supplication is answered, his provision is widened and, by Allah's leave, he finds healing. If it is recited over a sick person whom the physicians are unable to cure, saying "Ya Allah, jalla jalaluhu", he recovers so long as his appointed time has not come. For every material and spiritual need the noble name Allah is recited 66 times as "Ya Allah, jalla jalaluhu", and by Allah's leave the intended purposes are fulfilled.
