Al-Kabir

The Absolutely Great. Allah Almighty says: "[He is] Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Exalted." (Ar-Ra'd, 9) "Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand." (An-Nisa, 34) "...And [because] Allah is the Most High, the Grand." (Al-Hajj, 62) "...And [because] Allah is the Most High, the Grand." (Luqman, 30) "...And He is the Most High, the Grand." (Saba, 23) "...So judgement belongs to Allah, the Most High, the Grand." (Ghafir, 12) He is the one and only Great One, than whom everything else is smaller and who cannot be contained within any framework whatsoever. The greatness of the Lord is without limit. There is none besides Himself who knows Him. We cannot comprehend His greatness — but if we reflect on how great the things He has created are, we come to some understanding of His greatness. Al-Kabir means the possessor of greatness. Greatness consists in the essence attaining perfection and in the perfection of its existence. This applies to Allah alone. This attribute belongs absolutely to Allah alone; for created beings it can be used only metaphorically.

The noble name Al-Kabir is recited 232 times as "Ya Kabir, jalla jalaluhu" in order to appear dignified and majestic in the eyes of people, and so that no one may act proudly or arrogantly towards one. If a person in debt recites the noble name Al-Kabir often, God willing he is freed from debt and his provision becomes ample. Whoever is dismissed from the post he holds, if he makes remembrance with the noble name Al-Kabir a thousand times a day for seven days, he is restored to it. Whoever persists in this remembrance becomes great in the outward and the inward worlds. If the noble name Al-Kabir is recited over some food and it is given to a husband and wife whose relationship has broken down, God willing their relationship is set right.
