Qurbani Calculator

Qurbani (sacrifice) means drawing close to Allah. It expresses submission to Allah, gratitude, and the willingness to sacrifice wealth for His sake. It was prescribed in the second year of Hijra.

Hanafi scholars hold that Qurbani is wajib (obligatory). It is slaughtered for the purpose of drawing close to Allah and solely to gain His pleasure.

• Being Muslim. • Being free (not a slave). • Being a resident (not a traveler). • Possessing nisab-level wealth.

• Sheep & Goat: Must be at least 1 year old. (6 months is sufficient if the sheep looks mature.) • Cattle & Buffalo: Must be at least 2 years old. • Camel: Must be at least 5 years old.

• Sheep and goat can only be sacrificed on behalf of 1 person. • Cattle, buffalo and camel can be shared by up to 7 people. • All partners must be Muslim and must participate with the intention of worship.

Qurbani is performed on the 10th, 11th and 12th of Dhul Hijjah. It begins after Eid prayer and continues until Asr time on the 3rd day of Eid.

The animal is laid on its left side facing the qibla, without causing distress, using a sharp knife. "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" is recited and the throat is cut. The windpipe, esophagus and both jugular veins must be severed.

The recommended practice is to divide the meat into thirds: 1/3 for the household, 1/3 for friends and relatives, 1/3 for those in need.

• The meat, hide or offal of Qurbani cannot be sold. If sold, the money must be given as charity. • The butcher's fee cannot be paid with Qurbani meat. • Milk must not be taken from the animal, nor its wool sheared.
