Eclipse Prayer
A solar eclipse is called Kusuf; a lunar eclipse is called Husuf. The Kusuf Prayer is performed during a solar eclipse; the Husuf Prayer is performed during a lunar eclipse. Performing these prayers is among the confirmed Sunnahs. The Kusuf and Husuf prayers are Sunnah, not obligatory. Their ruling is also mentioned in the Holy Quran: "Night and day, the sun and the moon are signs of Allah's existence. Do not prostrate to the sun and the moon. If you truly worship Allah, then prostrate to Him who created them." (Surah Fussilat, verse 37)
How to Perform
1 Steps
- It is performed in congregation during a solar eclipse. The imam leads the prayer by reciting the verses silently without an adhan.
- The call is made: "As-Salat al-Jami'atun: Gather for prayer!"
- Intention: "I intend to perform the Kusuf prayer for the sake of Allah." If following an imam, add "I follow the imam."
- 1st RAK'AH: Takbir, Subhanaka, Fatiha and a surah are recited. Ruku and sajdahs are performed before standing for the second rak'ah.
- 2nd RAK'AH: Bismillah, Fatiha and a surah are recited. Perform ruku, sajdahs, and final sitting before giving the salam.
