Taraweeh Prayer

Tarawih prayer is a Sunnah prayer, even a confirmed Sunnah prayer, which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regularly performed. It is performed after the Isha (night) prayer throughout the month of Ramadan. Performing Tarawih prayer in congregation at the mosque is Sunnah and has great reward. It can also be performed at home, alone or in congregation. So, how many rak'ahs is Tarawih prayer and how is it performed? It is performed after the Isha prayer and before the Witr prayer. It consists of 20 rak'ahs, and it is preferable to give a salam (greeting) after every 2 rak'ahs. However, it can also be performed by giving a salam after every 4 rak'ahs. Together with the Isha prayer, a total of 33 rak'ahs are performed.

How to Perform

5 Steps
  • Tarawih prayer begins after the obligatory and final sunnah prayers of the Isha prayer.
  • First, the intention for Tarawih prayer is made by saying "Euzü Besmele"; "I intend to perform the Tarawih prayer for the sake of Allah." Then, the opening takbir is said and the hands are clasped.
  • "Subhanake" is recited, "Euzü Besmele" is recited, and then the "Fatiha" surah is recited along with a "Surah". Ruku and prostration are performed, and then the second rak'ah begins.
  • "Besmele, Fatiha and a surah" are recited, ruku and prostration are performed, and then the tahiyyat (sitting) is performed.
  • If it is to be performed in two rak'ahs; The "Ettehiyyatü prayer, Salli Barik prayers, and Rabbena prayers" are recited, and the prayer is completed by giving the salutation.
  • If it is to be performed as four rak'ahs; when sitting for the first sitting, the "Ettehiyyatü prayer and Salli Barik prayers" are recited, then one rises for the third rak'ah.
  • "Subhanake," "Euzü besmele," Fatiha, and a surah are recited in order, followed by bowing and prostration, then one rises for the fourth rak'ah.
  • "Besmele, Fatiha, and a surah" are recited, bowing and prostration are performed, and one sits.
  • In this sitting, after reciting the "Ettehiyyatü prayer, Salli Barik prayers, and Rabbena prayers," salutations are given to the right and left sides. Thus, the first four rak'ahs of the Tarawih prayer are completed.
  • The sequence continues in this manner for all the rak'ahs of the Tarawih prayer, depending on how many rak'ahs are to be performed in total.
