Al-Basit

"The Expander, who grants abundance to whom He wills."

Meaning

The One who places souls in bodies, who expands, opens and grants abundance. Allah Almighty says: "And if Allah had extended [excessively] provision for His servants, they would have committed tyranny throughout the earth. But He sends [it] down in an amount which He wills. Indeed He is, of His servants, Acquainted and Seeing." (Ash-Shura, 27) It means the One who expands the provision of the servants He wills, or who spreads souls into bodies. Allah grants material and spiritual abundance and ease in this world to those who believe in Him and obey Him from the heart. He opens up the difficulties before them. In every kind of hardship, distress and illness they face, the believers take refuge in Allah alone and take Him as their trustee. In return, Allah makes matters difficult for the disbelievers while making matters easy for the believers. From one servant He may take away the wealth He granted, the children, the pleasure of life, the ease of heart; to another He may give a wholly new life, joy and abundance of provision. Provision is delivered to everyone, poor and rich alike. Allah has also declared that there are profound lessons in the fact that provision is not equal among people. The greatest abundance and expansion of all is Allah's spreading of His mercy into hearts. A reminder: Taking the name Al-Basit as his guide, the servant should do good to every person in need — indeed, to every living creature. Every Muslim must sincerely believe that there is no one besides Allah who expands and restricts provision. He is also the One who brings hearts to peace, purifies tongues and all the other limbs from evil, and makes their owners happy.
