Al-Hayy

The Ever-Living. Allah Almighty says: "And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die." (Al-Furqan, 58) "And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining." (Ta-Ha, 111) "He is the Ever-Living." (Ghafir, 65) "Allah — there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence." (Al 'Imran, 2) Al-Hayy means the One who possesses complete life in every respect. He is the One who, along with hearing, seeing, power and will, also possesses all the other essential attributes, and who gathers within Himself every meaning of a life without deficiency. And rely upon that Ever-Living who does not die: to be delivered from their evils and to have your heart content with whatever recompense they may give, rely upon that undying Living One alone. Mortals who cannot escape death fall, and those who lean upon them are lost. And glorify Him with His praise: in gratitude for His blessings, show reverence with all His lofty attributes and affirm that He is free of every deficiency. Sufficient is He as the One aware of the sins of His servants! Even if no one else knows, His knowing is enough. Allah, who knows the open and the hidden without need of any informer and who is aware of all things, will give them their due. Even if He were to give no other punishment, His knowing alone suffices as a punishment.

The noble name Al-Hayy is recited 18 times as "Ya Hayy, jalla jalaluhu" for a long life, for the heart to find life through the light of divine unity, and for every wish to be realized. Whoever recites the noble name Al-Hayy 300,000 times, saying "Ya Hayy, jalla jalaluhu", does not fall ill. If the noble name Al-Hayy is written with musk and rose water and then mixed into something sweet and drunk by a sick person, he recovers. Whoever seeks help from Allah with these two names, "Ya Hayy, Ya Qayyum", has as it were sought help from Allah by all His names and attributes. For this reason, seeking help from Allah with these two names is more effective in being delivered from distress, grief and sorrow, hardship and straitness, and in attaining one's desires.
