Al-Mumit

The One who causes death and creates death. Allah Almighty says: "Wherever you may be, death will overtake you..." (An-Nisa, 78) "Every soul will taste death..." (Al-Anbiya, 35) "Say: 'Indeed, the death from which you flee — indeed, it will meet you...'" (Al-Jumu'ah, 8) Al-Mumit does not occur as a name in the Qur'an but appears as a verb. Al-Mumit is the One who causes living beings to die. Through death Allah takes away the strength of the healthy and the powerful. He is the One who gives life to all things and causes them to die, and who has power over all things. Just as Allah glorifies Himself with the attribute of giving life, He also glorifies Himself with the attribute of causing death. This is so that we may know that good and evil, benefit and harm come from Him alone; that He has no partner in His dominion; that He alone is everlasting and eternal; and that all beings besides Him are perishing. Every Muslim should know and believe that Allah alone, absolutely, is the One who gives life and causes death. It is stated in the Qur'an: "How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life?" (Al-Baqarah, 28) According to this noble verse it may be said that there was no life beforehand. And if, though alive, you occupy yourself with error and innovation, you are in the ruling of the dead.

The noble name Al-Mumit is recited 490 times as "Ya Mumit, jalla jalaluhu" for the destruction of oppressors and enemies. Whoever makes much remembrance with the noble name Al-Mumit, saying "Ya Mumit, jalla jalaluhu", spiritual states come to prevail over him. If he supplicates for the destruction of an oppressor or a transgressor, that person dies at once. If one who cannot accustom his soul to obedience and worship recites this noble name abundantly with that intention, saying "Ya Mumit, jalla jalaluhu", his soul obeys him and he begins to worship.
