Al-Majid

Great and lofty in glory; possessor of honour; immense in grandeur, worth and glory; abundant in giving; noble in essence; excellent in His works. Allah Almighty says: "Owner of the Throne, the Glorious." (Al-Buruj, 15) "Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Glorious." (Hud, 73) It occurs in 4 places in the Noble Qur'an — in two as a description of the Qur'an and in two as a name of Allah. Allah's glory shows itself throughout the universe with clear evidence. There is no person who does not recognise the loftiness of His glory. Even those who deny Him and say "we do not believe" in fact recognise and know His power and glory, because they witness what He has created; yet they deny it because of the desire for arrogance within them. Both the magnificent beauties and the flawless systems Allah has created in the universe are befitting of His glory. Clouds carrying tons of water in the sky; stars millions of light years away; waterfalls flowing with a great roar and unbelievable force; oceans of boundless expanse; mountains thousands of metres high with snow-covered peaks; forests sheltering countless species of every colour and sound — these are only a few of the beauties He has created. An earthquake that levels a city in seconds; a volcano that erupts in an instant and pours out lava of thousands of degrees; a flood that sweeps everything before it; a lightning bolt that brings death where it strikes; a typhoon that destroys everything in its path — these are only indications of His power. Allah created them all in a manner befitting His glory. And when any one of these torments touches His creatures, they collapse where they stand, never to rise again. These and millions of other examples that cannot be counted here are only the evidence in the universe of the greatness of Allah's glory. What will be seen in the Hereafter will be far beyond these. Allah is exceedingly vast in His giving, His beneficence and His bounty. Whoever knows this name always exalts Allah, and his knowledge concerning Him increases. He believes with certain knowledge that Allah's goodness is beautiful, His giving and beneficence abundant, His superiority unsurpassable, and that none of His acts is unseemly. Al-Majid carries the same meaning as Al-Majid (with the short form) but expresses emphasis and is broader in meaning. The name Al-Majid is among Allah Almighty's affirmative attributes.

The noble name Al-Majid is recited 57 times as "Ya Majid, jalla jalaluhu" in order to be worthy of honour and dignity, for provision to be plentiful and livelihood easy, and to be delivered from distress. Whoever recites the noble name Al-Majid 79 times after the dawn prayer, saying "Ya Majid, jalla jalaluhu", then breathes upon his hands and wipes them over his face and body, becomes a person of honour and dignity among those close to him. One afflicted with vitiligo (a kind of skin disease), if he fasts on the White Days (the 13th, 14th and 15th of each lunar month) and says "Ya Majid, jalla jalaluhu" abundantly every evening at the time of breaking his fast, God willing he is delivered from this grievous illness, either without apparent cause or through a means that Allah Most High opens for him. It is hoped that whoever persists in reciting this name will be granted a share of greatness. If a person has no worth or honour among his own relatives, let him recite this name 99 times after the dawn prayer and breathe it over himself; he will become honoured and respected among his relatives.
