Al-Muhsi

"The Reckoner, who knows the exact number of all things."

Meaning

The One who knows the number of all things in full detail. Allah Almighty says: "And He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number." (Al-Jinn, 28) Al-Muhsi means the Truth's knowing every single thing with all its details. The servant feels his need for this name in order to preserve within himself the matters Allah Almighty has commanded him to guard. Al-Muhsi is the One who knows the number and measure of all events, both those human knowledge encompasses and those it cannot. He knows every breath living creatures draw, their provision, people's acts of obedience and their sins, their nearness, the number of raindrops and grains of sand, all plants, all species of animal, the dead and the living. In short, Allah knows the number of all beings, both those that remain and those that have passed away. This attribute establishes that Allah, unlike human beings, is not powerless to grasp the number of beings on account of their multitude. He knows all beings and their number. The servant who has taken on the character of this name is the one who, in observing rights and duties, never lets go of the measure by which he assesses his state — and so keeps watch over his breaths and his hours.
