Al-Muqaddim
"The Expediter, who advances whom He wills."
Meaning
The Expediter — who advances whom He wills by granting material and spiritual blessings; who brings forward and puts first whom He wills in bringing into being or removing, in time, place, honour and rank.
Allah Most High advances those He wills. This advancing occurs in matters of creation and material things as it does in other matters. Allah Most High created some living beings first and others later. To some He gave wealth and to others He did not.
It is not permissible to supplicate with one of the names Al-Muqaddim and Al-Mu'akhkhir without mentioning the other. Both are among Allah's attributes of action.
He is the One who advances whom He wills and holds back whom He wills. The one advanced rises to high stations; the one held back descends to the lowest. He does not advance the one He has held back, nor hold back the one He has advanced. To mention these two names together is better than to mention them separately.
The benefits of knowing this name: The Muslim should advance whom Allah has advanced and place behind whom Allah has placed behind. Whoever knows that Allah is Al-Muqaddim and Al-Mu'akhkhir does not rely on the abundance of his worship and good deeds, nor does he despair of Allah because of the abundance of his sins and misdeeds — for many who appear far from Allah are near, and many who appear near are in reality far from Him. He should always take refuge in Allah from an evil end and from putting sins first while deferring acts of worship.
