Ash-Shahid

The One who knows and sees all things; present and watching everywhere; who sees everything instantly and witnesses all things. Allah Almighty says: "Indeed Allah is, over all things, Witness." (Al-Hajj, 17) "And sufficient is Allah as Witness." (An-Nisa, 79) It occurs in 20 places in the Noble Qur'an. He witnesses all things; nothing can be hidden from Him, and He forgets nothing. Whoever does anything, whenever they do it, however they do it — Allah sees them doing it. Throughout his whole life, and especially in prayer, the Muslim should be as though he sees Allah. Even though he cannot see Allah, Allah sees him. Allah is without beginning and without end. He is the only absolute being. He is not bound by time or place. For this reason the concepts of past and future are one in Allah's sight. Allah knows all the events of the past and all that will happen in the future. He is the Witness of everything from the first moment the universe was created to the very last instant of the Day of Resurrection when it will pass away. He knows every event that occurs and every conversation that takes place. Nothing is hidden from Allah. For Him the light of day and the darkness of night are the same. The ignorant person believes that the darkness of night will conceal his sins and that he will be neither seen nor known by anyone. Yet Allah is witness to a person at every moment and in every place. Whether alone or among billions of people, a person's situation is the same in Allah's sight. Allah is witness at every moment and every second to the intention in the hearts of all people and to every thought that passes through their minds. Allah, who witnesses every event people experience in this world, will on the Day of Reckoning give them the full recompense of what they were doing, without any omission. Those who suppose that Allah does not see them and does not hear their words, and who think that their hidden sins will never confront them, will realise on the Day of Resurrection how mistaken they were — for Allah has witnessed, in all its detail, every event a person lived from the moment of birth to the moment of the last breath. "On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. Allah is, over all things, Witness." When the servant knows that all his movements, seen and unseen, are encompassed by Allah's knowledge, and that His knowledge is present during every kind of conduct, this requires him to keep an inner watch against every thought and idea displeasing to Allah. It also guards his outward world from every word and deed that would displease Allah. Thus he begins to worship Allah at the station of ihsan, worshipping as though he sees Allah — for though he cannot see Allah, Allah sees him.

If the noble name Ash-Shahid is recited 21 times as "Ya Shahid, jalla jalaluhu" over a rebellious child or a rebellious wife at the time before dawn or in the morning, they are set right. If someone's son does not obey him, let him place his index finger upon the son's hand and say "Ya Shahid, jalla jalaluhu"; by Allah's leave the son becomes obedient. Whoever recites abundantly, saying "Ya Shahid, jalla jalaluhu", with the desire for martyrdom, is granted martyrdom.
