At-Tawwab

The Acceptor of Repentance. Allah Almighty says: "Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful." (Al-Baqarah, 37) "Allah wants to accept your repentance." (An-Nisa, 27) "And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds, and He knows what you do." (Ash-Shura, 25) "The forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance." (Ghafir, 3) "Indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful." (At-Tawbah, 118) "And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed." (An-Nur, 31) Allah is the One who accepts repentance and shows mercy. He is so merciful a God that He does not abandon His servant for ever merely because He has left him once. As long as the servant turns back and repents, and does not persist as Iblis did, He looks again, and again, and looks endlessly. Once, twice, and finally a third time — He does not say "enough now"; He turns and looks countless times, because He is exceedingly merciful. Repentance essentially means returning to the origin. When ascribed to the servant, then, it means abandoning the transient state of sin and returning to one's original sound state. When ascribed to Allah, it expresses returning from the transient gaze of wrath to the original gaze of mercy. For this reason the legal meaning of repentance is explained as: the servant confessing his sin, feeling remorse for it and resolving never to repeat it, and Allah accepting this repentance and forgiving the sin. As often as the servant's repentance is repeated, its acceptance by Allah Most High, the Accepter of Repentance, is repeated as well. It should be known that never returning with full resolve to any sin committed out of ignorance, deliberately or inadvertently, forms the fundamental basis of repentance. Therefore repenting from sin, in whatever form, is obligatory. Know that repentance is possible from every sin. The sinful servant who repents becomes as though he never sinned. Repentance is accepted until the moment of death. Individually, the repentance of every person made before the throes of death arrive is accepted. Generally, for everyone, repentance is accepted as long as the signs the Prophet foretold and the Qur'an indicated have not appeared. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah accepts the repentance of a servant as long as the sun has not yet risen from the west." And: "O people, repent to your Lord. By Allah, I repent to my Lord, Blessed and Exalted, a hundred times a day."

The noble name At-Tawwab is recited 409 times as "Ya Tawwab, jalla jalaluhu" in order to be freed from committing sin, for provision to be ample and earnings blessed. Whoever recites the noble name At-Tawwab 360 times after the forenoon (duha) prayer, saying "Ya Tawwab, jalla jalaluhu", his repentance is accepted. Whoever recites the noble name At-Tawwab ten times against an oppressor, saying "Ya Tawwab, jalla jalaluhu", is delivered from oppression.
