Al-Barr

The Source of Goodness — abundant in grace and generosity toward His creation, who does good and fulfils His promise, and who loves those who do good. "Indeed, we used to supplicate Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful." (At-Tur, 28) Our Lord bestows upon us abundant gains: tenfold, seven-hundredfold, and beyond reckoning. There is no end to His beneficence. It is easy to understand how much our Allah bestows upon us, who records ten for a good deed and only one for a sin committed. All of these are gifts from our Lord. He is the One who bestows. Since He is the very source of every good and every favour, the possessor of absolute goodness is He and He alone. The beneficence of Allah Most High embraces all His servants. He increases the reward of His righteous servants. He forgives sinners. He forgives those who repent. The benefits of knowing the name Al-Barr: It leads the servant to know that when he commits a sin, Allah — though He sees him — conceals this failing and thereby does good to him. Had Allah willed, He would not have concealed that failing but would have disgraced him among people and caused them to shun him. Seeing this goodness of Allah, the servant should abandon sinning, always remember this goodness, and witness Allah's beneficence and generosity. He should make amends for his errors and be with Allah, never stepping outside His commands and prohibitions. The servant should turn to Allah with complete sincerity, listen to and obey the words of leaders who are upon the right path, and offer counsel to all Muslims. To earn Allah Most High's pleasure and goodness in every way, you must give away the things you love most and enjoy most. Allah Almighty says: "Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love." (Al 'Imran, 92)

It is recited 202 times as "Ya Barr, jalla jalaluhu" in order to be protected from evils and to attain goodness and divine bounty. If one who persists in the remembrance of this noble name is someone who commits a grave sin, he repents.
