Dhul-Jalali wal-Ikram

Lord of Majesty and Generosity — possessor of grandeur and bounty. Allah Almighty says: "And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour." (Ar-Rahman, 27) "Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour." (Ar-Rahman, 78) The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Persist frequently in [saying] 'Ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram.'" All grandeur and all bounty belong to Allah. Every good and every gift originates from Him. There is no limit to His bounty toward people in general and toward His friends in particular. Dhul-Jalal means the One who comprehends the reality of grandeur. Dhul-Ikram means His manifesting Himself to the servants in such a way that they behold Him, as the sun is seen at midday without cloud. Ikram (bounty) is used when the Giver of blessings grants blessings to those He values and to whom He shows love and respect. For example, to express the blessings of karamah He grants to the friends of Allah it is said "akramahu" (He bestowed upon him). Allah has honoured them, valued them and rewarded them with lofty stations by bestowing upon them blessings He has not bestowed upon others. Allah may bestow upon His servants in this world, or He may defer it to the Hereafter. Allah gives His blessing both to the one who deserves it and to the one who does not — but He gives His bounty to none but those who deserve it, just as in the Hereafter He does not give His blessing to those who do not deserve it. In this world there are countless blessings that please the human being. Allah has adorned the world with various details in which His servants find delight. But of course the place where Allah will truly display His infinite generosity and beneficence is Paradise. The Paradise described in the Qur'an lays His infinite bounty before our eyes. One of the most striking features of Paradise described in the Qur'an is that 'everything the souls desire' has been given. Rivers flow beneath Paradise; its fruits and its shade are perpetual; there is shade neither hot nor cold but just right. The believers will be given abundantly of the fruits and meat they desire and long for. Lofty mansions have been built, with rivers flowing beneath them. They sit upon jewelled couches, finely wrought, and gaze about them. The hospitality offered is exceedingly splendid: youths who serve them circulate among them with vessels and cups of crystal and silver. The garments of the believers too are exceedingly resplendent. A servant needs this name in order to bring himself to a position of respect and regard.

The noble name Dhu'l-Jalali wa'l-Ikram is recited 1,100 times as "Ya Dha'l-Jalali wa'l-Ikram, jalla jalaluhu" for worldly affairs to be made easy, for the doors of good to be opened and the doors of evil to be closed. If the noble name Dhu'l-Jalali wa'l-Ikram is recited 333 times every day in the form "Malika'l-mulki Dha'l-jalali wa'l-ikram", the world becomes attached to the one who recites it.
