Al-Qawi

"The Most Strong."

Meaning

The One who has power over all things, absolutely and unconditionally. Allah Almighty says: "...Indeed, He is Powerful and severe in punishment." (Ghafir, 22) "...Indeed, Allah is Powerful and severe in penalty." (Al-Anfal, 52) Allah Almighty is Strong and Powerful. No strength can oppose His strength; no power can withstand His might. Everything is easy for Him; nothing is difficult for Him. Strength and power belong to Him. It is our bounden duty to take refuge in His strength. Throughout history Allah sent messengers to various peoples and through them made known His will to mankind. The messengers conveyed to their peoples that Allah is the only deity, that one must fear and heed Allah alone, and that His commands must be carried out. Yet as we are told, most of those peoples fell into denial, rejected the messengers and deserved Allah's punishment. In every age the deniers who rejected the messengers Allah sent, who made things as difficult as possible for them and sought to distress them, did not abandon this attitude until they saw Allah's punishment. The deniers who could not grasp this important truth were consumed by a craving for a greatness they could never attain. They disregarded the fact that Allah, if He willed, could destroy all their possessions with a single storm, ruin their crops with a violent rain, kill all their loved ones with a microbe, and countless other causes by which the power and wealth in their hands could be annihilated. In the end they came face to face with Allah's punishment both on earth and, after death, in the Hereafter. Whoever knows Allah's might and strength abandons boasting of his own strength and turns to the Possessor of supreme power. This name teaches a person to know Allah's awe, splendour and exaltedness and to rely on His strength.
