Al-Muhyi

The Giver of life, who revives. Allah Almighty says: "Indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and to Us is the destination." (Qaf, 43) "And it is He who gives life and causes death." (Al-Mu'minun, 80) "And he presents for Us an example and forgets his [own] creation. He says, 'Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?' Say, 'He will give them life who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing.'" (Ya-Sin, 78-79) "Indeed, that [same one] will give life to the dead." (Ar-Rum, 50) The One who creates life, brings living things into being, revives the dead, gives life and animates. To this day the human being has not been able to create a single living creature. It is Allah who gives life to the sperm-drop and turns the seed into a flower. The revival of societies is in Allah's hand. Our Lord has laws of revival. The law He laid down for the revival of societies is: "Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves." (Ar-Ra'd, 11) To give life to a being, to create it from nothing, and to arrange the conditions of the world so that it can sustain its life is a quality belonging solely to Allah, the Possessor of infinite power. Allah joins together an egg and a sperm too small to be seen by the eye. As soon as the sperm enters the egg, a membrane covers the egg's surface, and life begins. Allah divides this tiny cell first into two, then into four, and this division continues rapidly. And so a miraculous life begins in the mother's womb. After a time these same cells differentiate to form the brain, the nervous system, the hard bones and the cartilage. Thus within nine months Allah creates from nothing a human being who sees, hears, speaks and reasons, and grants him life. It is clear that an egg and a sperm could not accomplish these miraculous events that occur during the stages of a living being's formation. It is Allah alone who joins them and who protects and grows the baby in the womb for nine months. This is the first creation and the first giving of life. After bringing the human being into the world, Allah permits him to live. Then Allah has appointed for all people a day of death in their destiny. Until that day of death He keeps them in worldly life for a set time and tests them. When the appointed term arrives He takes their souls, and in order to give the recompense of the deeds they performed in the world He revives them after their death, just as He brought them into being from nothing before. Without doubt this is very easy for Allah, who possesses infinite power.

The noble name Al-Muhyi is recited 68 times as "Ya Muhyi, jalla jalaluhu" so that the heart may be revived with the light of faith and gnosis, and so that the joy of living may be born within it. If a person fears imprisonment, the noble name Al-Muhyi is recited over crumbs of bread, saying "Ya Muhyi, jalla jalaluhu", and they are eaten.
